Due to the increase of mobile devices in the workplace and the growing percentage of millennial workers, employers have a greater need than ever before to monitor their employee’s digital activity. However, employees are often wary of workplace data collection, and especially mobile device monitoring. Overly strict policies can be perceived as a lack of trust, and may alienate workers.
To help companies navigate this issue, TechnologyAdvice Research conducted a nationwide internet survey to learn more about employee’s attitudes towards workplace data monitoring. 401 U.S. adults were surveyed between November 17-19, 2014 about their knowledge of current workplace policies, how they felt about a variety of different monitoring tactics, and whether they had ever had an encounter with a manager over their technology use.

In the full report we examine the potential effects of these findings, and look at employee attitudes towards additional monitoring tactics. These include widespread practices such as keylogging software, video surveillance, and time tracking programs. We also investigate the age breakdown of responses, and forecast the impact of rising millennial employment on such programs.
