All the email marketers need to do is put the user’s ID in the image path, e.g. blah.com/user123-image.jpg, and they’ll know exactly whether user123 opened the email (as long as Google is proxying the request and not actually pre-fetching them, which they probably aren’t to avoid paying for images in emails which never get opened). Now, marketers will get better data on open rates. This is a step backwards in protecting users’ privacy from being tracked.

This is an awesome post.  By accident, I found out that when you include a hyperlink in an email from a Gmail account that is linked to your YouTube channel, it displays a thumbnail image at the bottom of the email that the recipient can click on (and the video will start playing immediately)… that’s IF and this is a big IF….the email program your recipient uses doesn’t strip those images out before it gets to them.   When Google uses the word “protect me from unknown senders who might try to use these images to compromise….. – I have to wonder if they are protecting me or themselves ;0)
